The Plough is long standing venue for work lunches and post work dinner and a favourite of mine. Lately they’ve just gotten into the swing of summer by relaunching Boca Grande. This pop up in their garden is home of an insane taco menu!
Luckily for me I won a competition run by Brumpic to win ALL the tacos on offer at The Plough. So one Thursday I grabbed a good friend of mine to come help me demolish the entire contents of the taco menu. And now I’m going to show you what is on offer. The Boca Grande kitchen is open in the garden until September. Fear not, you don’t have to sit outside (when that inevitable summer rain returns again) to enjoy the tacos though, you can order inside at the bar as normal.
Sweet Corn with Lime, Garlic + Butter, Tortilla Chips, Hot Chilli Salsa, Sour Cream and Guacamole
Part of the menu are some epic sides of nachos with all of the dip. Although I must admit the hot salsa was not that hot. But they it was enjoyable all the same. Obviously the sweetcorn was pretty delicious being slathered in butter with garlic! It was the perfect accompaniment for the tacos.
Chipotle and Quinoa chilli with Avocado + Crispy Parsnip (Veg)
Let’s start with my least favourite, I’m sorry quinoa, you’re not the one for me. My friend tells me these are pretty good for a veggie option, they have a good smokiness to them from the chipotle. Her fella is veggie and she thinks he would approve of these.
Lemongrass Chicken with Ginger + Lime Slaw
Next up these tender chicken tacos. The lemongrass was fragrant and went well with the lime slaw. I have to admit I’m more of a fan of spicy tacos, so these do not make it as my order again in a heartbeat tacos. More on those tacos later.
Black Pepper Prawn with Spring Onion + Chilli
Ok, so I didn’t have the quinoa and my friend doesn’t like prawns. So this totally worked for me. I get BOTH prawn tacos! And my my these hit my spicy request. They were very fiery tacos indeed. I think I’d have enjoyed a pineapple salsa with them rather than spring onion, it might have taken the edge off the spice. For which I used the sweetcorn instead.
Baked Cod with Lime + Ginger
Whilst my friend isn’t a fan of seafood, we’re both a fan of cod. These fish tacos were fragrant and very tasty. The ginger worked well with the fish and the big chunks of chilli were a hit for me. They were a little sloppy though, so beware, napkins are needed!
Beef Brisket and Black Bean Chilli with Tomato Salsa + Chimichurri
The beef brisket was tender and the chilli with the salsa worked so well. Again another messy one, you’re gonna want napkins. You may also not want to share these ones, they were pretty darn good. I recommend a dollop of sour cream with them too.
Carnitas Pork with Spiced Apple + Mint
Last up and by no means least. Also by far the winner of all taco awards for me. This tender carnitas pork was spicy, but not overly. The spiced apple was sweet and worked so unbelievably well with the pork. When I make my return visit (I’m taking Dr W for lunch here) I will be ordering more of these just for myself. I suggest you do the same too.
