Chi Kitchen Christmas Menu Review | Birmingham

December 2, 2016

Last weekend Mr W and I were invited back to Chi Kitchen to check out their Christmas Menu.

Chi Kitchen is a Pan Asian restaurant based in Debenhams, with 2014 Masterchef winner Ping Coombes appointed Executive Chef for the group. There are two restaurants, one in London and the other in the Birmingham Bullring. The Christmas Menu promises to be Christmas with a twist! So what did we think…

Starters

To start Mr W picked the Crispy Chilli Prawns. The prawns were deep fried, but perfectly succulent, and the accompanying chilli dip was just the perfect level of spice. Delicious! I think Mr W wanted a few more prawns on his plate though.

I wanted something a bit different, so picked the Sweet Potato with Berry Mayo. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was very impressed when I saw it! Tempura battered sweet potato, with a cool and refreshing berry Mayo. The sweet potato was perfectly soft and the tempura batter wonderfully crisp. I thought this combo may have been too sweet but it really worked. I had to bat Mr W away to stop him from taking more after I gave him a taste!

Mains + Sides

For mains Mr W picked the Turkey Insal. This was the most tender turkey either of us have ever eaten! Definitely a wonderful twist on a Christmas staple. The Kalamansi sauce was sweet, but spicy and the perfect accompaniment to the dish.

I picked the Teriyaki Salmon. Perfectly cooked salmon, with a sweet Teriyaki sauce. Maybe a little bit uninspiring, a different type of sauce may have been a bit more exciting? But it was perfectly cooked and I finished the lot!

To accompany our mains we picked both side options. The Salt and Pepper Chips (total guilty pleasure) and Egg Fried Rice. The chips, oh my, the chips! Hands down the naughtiest and best side ever! Not a classic, but comforting in this cold weather. I should add here Chi Kitchen know how to do carbs. The egg fried rice was fluffy, tasty, well seasoned and just brilliant also.

Desserts

Not really sure how we managed it, but we did. Also we’d ordered 3 courses, so we couldn’t really stop the waitress from bringing dessert… Mr W the complete chocoholic he is opted for the Chocolate Walnut Brownie with Clotted Cream Custard and Ice Cream. This was gooey, sweet and moreish. I admit I stole quite a lot. (Sorry not Mr W!)

For want of having tried pretty much everything on the menu I must admit I drew the short straw. I went with the Apple Gyoza and Vanilla Ice Cream. I wanted to be impressed, and I kinda was. But not enough. The apple needed a bit more oompf, maybe some cinnamon or mixed spice? It really was just apple in pastry with ice cream. But if you’re after a simple dessert after the other courses, then maybe this one is for you?!

Overall

The menu is Β£21.95 per person at the Birmingham Chi Kitchen, which I think is great value considering what you get. The menus are here and everyone gets a complimentary Mixed Berry Bellini with their meal. Unlike the Chi Kitchen Afternoon Tea there seems to be choice for vegetarians, and overall we were very impressed with the service and food.

Would you go to Chi Kitchen for your Christmas Meal? Or is traditional more your thing? Let me know in the comments,

The sweet potato sounds great! And what a change to have plenty of veggie options too. I didn’t realise that Debenhams were branching out to having such interesting restaurants in store. I’ll definitely be checking it out if I’m down in Birmingham before Christmas πŸ™‚

It was great to see veggie options as I didn’t seen any on the afternoon tea menu (however, they do on the normal menu!)

Oh my! That whole meal looks amazing and really good value for money. I’ve only had tempura sweet potato once and loved it so I’d love to try that starter. And you really can’t go wrong with a good portion of fries!
