Exploring the Magic Lantern Festival | Birmingham

November 28, 2016

Last week I was invited down to the Magic Lantern Festival switch on at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. This was rather exciting as Christmas is just around the corner, plus the event gave me a chance to see my sister!

The Magic Lantern Festival is a spectacular fusion of art, heritage and culture. A stunning outdoor Christmas themed event as well as one of light and illumination. The event involves a trail around Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens. You get to wander round looking at amazing giant lanterns, which represent Christmas, traditional Chinese culture and the amazing 2000-year heritage of Lantern Festivals.

The opening was pretty spectacular, when the lights got switched on the whole Botanical Gardens came to life. It was just stunning! Because of my train home I only had around half an hour to explore, I’d love to go back for longer as there’s just so much to see. My sister and I are hoping to take my mum to visit we reckon she would love it too!

There were all sorts of lanterns, from Zodiac signs to famous fairytales. There were also some fun Christmas lanterns too. It’s quite a long trail and you will stop a lot to look. I definitely suggest wrapping up warm as you walk around. There are also plenty of food stalls to keep you going throughout your adventure- the churros looked pretty good!

If you fancy visiting, the Magic Lantern Festival at Birmingham Botanical Gardens runs from 25/11/2016 until 02/01/2017, tickets are available online. Have you been to a Magic Lantern Festival? Would you go? Let me know in the comments,

I went to the one in London last year, it’s so pretty. I love the penguins, they’re so cute.
