The New Yo! Sushi in the Bullring | Birmingham

February 7, 2018

The other week my friend Ms S and I were invited down to the newly opened YO! Sushi in Birmingham Selfridges Food Hall. Looking forward to food and a catch up, what did we think…

Already a big fan of YO! Sushi I was already excited for our visit ahead of time. When we arrived we decided over drinks – some weird thing Ms S struggled to open and just a plain old Diet Coke for me – and edamame beans that we would hit up the warm Japanese food offerings at YO! I noticed this was a big feature on my last visit, but mainly stuck with sushi, so what did our street food choices have in store for us…

YO! Sushi Birmingham Bullring

YO! Sushi Drinks including Diet Coke

YO! Sushi Grey Bowl - Edamame Beans

We started off with what could be considered an odd order for YO! Sushi, the Furikake Fries. But reader, do not fear we have gone mad, these were worth the ordering. The fries were covered in lashings of spicy sriracha mayo, and basically so more-ish we should’ve ordered 2 bowls!

YO! Sushi Blue Plate - Furakake Fries

YO! Sushi Pink Plate - Katsu Curry

Next up the ever popular Katsu Curry, I opted for the prawn version. Deep fried prawns in panko breadcrumbs, with the wonderful katsu sauce and fluffy rice. It may not look like a big dish but it’s definitely filling!

YO! Sushi Orange Plate - Chicken Karaage

Keeping with deep fried fun we had opened for the Chicken Karaage, this featured sake in the batter but it didn’t really come through. But the chicken was tender and I can’t fault that. Not sure I’d order again but it was tasty.

YO! Sushi - Blue Bowl - Popcorn Shrimp

Ms S isn’t the biggest seafood lover, but our next order may have won her over a little bit… the Popcorn Shrimp were delicately cooked in tempura batter. They were wonderfully cooked and not over done at all. Another dish that I would happily order again.

YO! Sushi Orange Plate - Gyoza

Along with the katsu there’s another thing you can’t not order on a visit to YO! Sushi. The gyoza are an absolute menu staple. This time we picked the Chicken Gyoza, they were wonderfully crispy and soft in the middle. Perfect. Served with a spicy soy sauce, these were as good as ever!

Last but not least, Ms S opted for the Pork Belly Bao. Another new one for the menu, I was just gutted that it had cucumber in it! But I was assured by Ms S that the pork belly was wonderfully spiced and tender, this went well with crunchy pickle inside. I am assured she would also order this again!

Overall we had a great time at YO! Sushi, it’s great to see that you don’t need to like sushi to check out YO! They have great vegetarian and vegan offerings too, so don’t feel like you can’t try them out because you don’t eat meat!

Have you tried anything off the not sushi menu at YO! Sushi? What would you like to check out from what we picked? Let me know in the comments,

I wasn’t a fan of the fries to be honest, think I would have preferred ordering something else in the blue plate range. Perhaps we didn’t have enough sriracha mayo and once that was gone, it was just boring fries.

Ours were dropping in the mayo! Not one chip was bland. It’s a shame they didn’t put enough on yours 🙁

    Good evening.
Now Japan time is 11 pm on the 7 th.
Sushi is a popular menu globally.
I am also a Japanese lover of sushi.
But what about sushi being eaten in the US · Europe etc, compared with the original Japanese sushi? is not it.

I could eat edamame beans all day long! You have just reminded me to visit our local Yo Sushi for a long overdue outing 🙂

They’ve had a real menu shake up which you may enjoy! It’s not all sushi now 🙂

okay now I need sushi. I once had an idea to film a music video with the camera going around the sushi belt, now all I need is a band right
