Manchester 10k | Race Recap

May 13, 2015

So on Sunday I ran the Manchester 10k. Having been slightly under trained I was a little nervous about running…

I headed in to town a bit before I was due to start and how glad I am now that I went when I did, I forgot the Manchester 10k is even bigger than ever (I last ran it in 2012!) I eventually found somewhere I’d be allowed to join the crowd thinking I’d only just made it in time… It turns out I was wrong, after filtering on to Portland Street I realised I was right at the start of the pack. RIGHT AT THE START LINE.

Whilst it was awesome, I got to be on TV (thanks Dannii for catching me) I was hurled in with club runners and the 50 mins pacer was next to me. Annoyingly the crowd was pretty compact so it was impossible to turn round at this point and the marshals wouldn’t let me wait to cross the start line. So bang went the starting gun and off I got carried with the club runners…

My first 1km came through as 5min 50sec, this is much faster than EVER. I knew this was then going to be a fight from then on in, so I tried to keep pace saying to myself I can only walk at water stops, of which there are 2. I figured if I didn’t try and keep up I wouldn’t finish, so up the music went and off I carried on running.

The kilometres flew by, 3k then 4k then half way… I slowed for water as promised and then kept on going… 6k, 7k (more water) then 8k. The kilometre between 8k and 9k went on forever, I knew something was up and regretted not taking a jelly baby from the marshals. I caught my friends out cheering me at 9k and that gave me a boost, but this was not without punishment. For the first time in my running history I hit a wall, the world literally wobbled and I knew I just had to keep on going until the finish line. I don’t remember a thing about the finish, I was in another world. The race wasn’t a personal PB but it was a PB for the Manchester 10k, the last one I did in 1h 8m, this one 1h 6m! Crikey! Although this was a mistake and my body definitely punished me for it as I was really aiming for 1h 10m…

I did really enjoy the race though and I’m chuffed I finished, I’ve almost hit my target running for Manchester Mind so I’m hoping my next 10k will get me to my £300 target… Don’t forget you can simply sponsor me by texting POND88 £5 to 70070. Thanks to everyone who’s donated so far,

My god you’re amazing woman!! You and Lucy are going to have to leave me for dead in July – I can’t hope to ever get a time like that. Well done for smashing it 🙂

Oh shoosh Rebecca! I’ve seen your 5k times on Insta 😉 This was stupidly hard and I was buggered after, really don’t fancy doing that again! At least I should be trained up a bit more for July….

Many congratulations!!! You did so well and it’s nice to get a PB – beating your original Mcr 10k by 2 minutes is awesome, however I can imagine having to run up front was quite intimidating – but you did it!! 🙂 Sim #WeightLossWednesday xx

Wow – well done! I’ve just signed up for a 5k an am nervous about that. However – you never turn down a jelly baby! Ever! That’s one of the first rules of life.

Thank you 🙂 I’m sure the 5k will be awesome! I think I was just so focussed on the finish line, I didn’t have the energy to attempt to take one! Lol 🙂

The steep bit 6-7k was hell for me. Be proud mate, not everybody can run 10k… it’s a long bloody way. x

    • Reply MissPond May 14, 2015 at 10:06 am

I’m not so fussed by hills, it’s the down hill where I’m always caught out coz I run too fast then I’m buggered later on!!!! I’m proud, just achey 😉 x

Woop woop!! I only want to be able to run 5km… but you know, 10km can be a dream 🙂

    • Reply MissPond May 14, 2015 at 10:05 am

If you can run 5km, 10km is doable!!! I always thought I’d never run more than 5k 🙂

  • Reply Suzanne May 13, 2015 at 12:48 pm

Great work 🙂 I’m completely in awe, I think a 5k would be completely beyond me let along 10k

    • Reply MissPond May 21, 2015 at 11:04 pm

I bet you could do it, you could definitely do 5k!! x
