30 Things I Didn’t Do Before My 30th Birthday | The Anti Bucket List

June 25, 2018

I had a 30 before 30 list once, then I got diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and my world completely changed. I then tried a much gentler list, but university/wanting a career got in the way. Before I knew it there wasn’t time to complete it.

But you know what?! I’m not sure I’m all that bothered about not having achieved a special list before turning 30. Which is this coming Saturday for anyone wanting to send me a new bottle of gin/a corgi/a Fiat 500 in mint green. Because I’m not one to stick to a plan. I feel everything happens for a reason, your career path, your choices etc. So yeah. Today I’ve decided in the week of my 30th to share with you my 30 Things I Didn’t Do Before 30.

Strawberries and Cream Birthday Cake Recipe

  1. Have children (stop asking everyone)
  2. Go to Thailand (mainly coz Thai food is my fave)
  3. Have a first name authored paper (I was a pretty bad PhD student – papers weren’t my goal)
  4. Meet/Marry/Snog Trent Reznor (sadly not gonna happen now)
  5. Get married (long story, but buying a house was an infinitely better use of my money)
  6. Get fired from a job (although I did walk out on a shift once never to return)
  7. Own a Mulberry handbag (unless Dr W buys me one for my birthday but he doesn’t like to fuel my handbag habit so unlikely)
  8. Meet/Marry/Snog Matt Bellamy (he’s my weird crush okay?!)
  9. Learn a language
  10. Go to Coachella
  11. Do yoga on the beach (so cliche right?!)
  12. Dye my hair (I’ve always been too scared)
  13. Meet/Marry/Snog Tom Hardy (yup never gonna happen now)
  14. Learn to play piano (surgery on my left wrist has kinda put that idea to bed)
  15. Procrastinate less (doesn’t everyone say this?)
  16. Go to Vegas (seriously considering as an idea for my hen do!)
  17. Climb a 4000m+ mountain (Dr W has summited a bunch including Mount Blanc – jealous)
  18. Go sky diving
  19. Go on a cruise
  20. Go to 30 different countries (I’ve managed 10 so far…)
  21. Own a car (Mint green Fiat 500 plz)
  22. Start a vlog (I always wanted to start a gin review vlog)
  23. Find the perfect jeans (never gonna happen right?)
  24. Go to the ballet
  25. Get shit faced at a vineyard (I really want to go round the vineyards of NZ… one day)
  26. Go to Iceland (I’m sad about this one)
  27. Gatecrash a wedding/party (I believe there is still time)
  28. Own a dog (I really want a corgi)
  29. Take a hot air balloon ride
  30. Finish that scrap book I’ve been doing for years!

Some of these things I was never going to do anyway and I feel like I’ve achieved an incredible amount in 30 years, including getting my PhD and buying a house! Hopefully some of the things in the list may happen by 40… I’m hoping more travel at least!

So, what have you got on your big list? Or what didn’t you achieve that you wish you did before a milestone birthday? Let me know in the comments,

I love this! If it makes you feel any better, I didn’t accomplish #13 either 🙁

I didn’t know 30 Before 30 was even a thing until I was half way through age 28, and then I thought it was a little late to come up and accomplish a list of 30 goals in just a year and a half. And considering my 30th birthday is in just 10 days, there is not going back on that decisions! One thing that would have been on that list that I really would have liked to accomplish though is participating in NaNoWriMo (you know, that project where you set forth to write a “novel” during the month of November?) I’d still like to cross that off my bucket list, so maybe I’ll make that a goal for my thirties.

I chuckled at #5, haha, I sometimes wish I’d just bought a house too. 😉 There’s plenty of time for you to do the things you want in your life (although stand in the queue for Trent Reznor! Me first!) 😉

Hahaha! There appears to be a large queue for Trent Reznor!

There are still so many of these things that you can do – I’m 27 now, and just thinking about my 30th scares me – it seems like such a milestone! And so much I haven’t accomplished!

You accomplish what you do by your 30th! People put too much pressure on themselves to get a list done by a milestone. Like I said I’m happy, I’ve achieved a lot already and yeah I can complete a lot of things on this list, but who cares if it’s by a milestone?! 🙂

I love this! Before I had children, I used to write these huge, ott list of things I wanted to achieve before I was 20,30 etc. It all gets a bit ridiculous in the end doesn’t it? I mean, don’t get me wrong, have goals – and smash them, but there’s no need to rush through xx

    • Reply MissPond July 9, 2018 at 9:16 pm

Definitely! Life is to be lived, and things can be busy enough without adding extra pressure.

    I agree, totally legitimate crush!

I wrote a few years ago about why I wasn’t going to do a 30 before 30 list and it’s basically that I have enough pressure in my life without making myself feel worse about what I HAVEN’T done. It’s my 30th in September and I’m just glad I’m getting to spend it celebrating with all the amazing people I’ve met over my time on this planet.
PS Seeing Trent Reznor on Wednesday, I’ll try and smuggle him back for you in time for the weekend 😉

Definitely – that’s really how I felt, espesh after the PhD. Can’t wait for your birthday party x x x

EXCUSE ME, MATT BELLAMY IS NOT A WEIRD CRUSH. Remind me to tell you the story some time of when my mate met him in a service station car park.
If you still want to see ballet, I volunteer as your ballet date. I also highly recommend Ballet Boyz, or anything choreographed by Matthew Bourne.

Haha – so many people used to take the mick out of me for fancying him. You can tell me on Thursday about how your mate met him! 🙂

If you could pick one to just knock off the list though what would you plump for? Reznor?

    • Reply MissPond July 9, 2018 at 9:20 pm

It would definitely be going to Iceland!

This post really resonates – I did actually make a 30 before 30 list but it focussed on smaller things that were achievable rather than getting too blue sky which would leave me annoyed because I wouldn’t be able to achieve half of them. I actual need to write an update on how I got on with my list since I turned 30 last month, but I cannot get over my procrastination tendencies! One to keep working on, I think. Have you considered a small diy wedding? We didn’t want to spend loads on getting married so we went a registry office and then had a bbq in my in laws garden. There were a dozen of us and it was amazing – and cheap.

We have been thinking of a DIY wedding. But I think we will go for a small family affair at a venue. We’ve got a place in mind 🙂 But definitely DIY for the decor etc.

This list sounds totally superb and you still have plenty of time to go through it tick it off, so don’t be in a rush. Heading to Thailand would be amazing, and you would totally love the Thai food there.

    • Reply MissPond July 9, 2018 at 9:22 pm

Definitely! I really want to go and learn how to cook Thai food in Thailand!
