This post is a bit late coming because last week I decided to have a week away from my space on the internet. And you know what? I kinda needed it. I’m back and have plenty to share and what better way to start than with 5 Happy Things.
This week’s Happy Things post is a flash back to my awesome birthday weekend. I must admit, I really dislike most holidays and occasions. They fill me with dread rather than joy. So when Dr W suggested we spend my birthday weekend together just the two of us, I really was rather happy about that. Spoiler alert readers: it really was the best weekend.
#1 Starting with cocktails
I got off the warm, slightly delayed train on the Friday evening and that is where my birthday began. I met Dr W off the train (my favourite Friday thing to do, no long walk home before I get a huge hug after a long day at work) and we headed to Tonic. Tonic is one of my favourite bars in Worcester, they have a huge gin selection. But they also have a pretty wonderful cocktail menu, which is what we were there for this time. The Gin and Elderflower Martini was an absolute hit for me and Dr W.
#2 Pre birthday steak with friends
Ok so cocktails got us a little hungry. Luckily there’s a new steak place in town and we managed to bag a table. Ounce Bar and Kitchen offer some amazing steaks, we went with the sharing Tomahawk (coz we greedy). My only gripe was that the service was ridiculously slow for a group of people that didn’t order starters. Thankfully we were in good company and we kept each other entertained. The steak itself was perfectly cooked, we enjoyed the peppercorn and blue cheese sauces. Hopefully the service will improve, we will visit again when they’ve had time to settle.
#3 Birthday Parkrun
Because lie ins really aren’t my thing anymore, I took my cocktail induced hangover to Parkrun. The heat and the hangover did not make this an easy run! It was far from my best time, but it did help shift the hangover… This week I ran it a bit more seriously and got a new pb of 29:42, which I’m super chuffed with!
#4 Swanky hotel stays
For my actual birthday (the Saturday) we headed to Birmingham. We stayed at Hotel du Vin, which is right in the centre of the city. It was a wonderfully opulent room, with the most amazing bathroom. The absolute upside was the air con too! We were complete room service w*nkers and ordered things to the room including Prosecco. It was so cool with the air con we could make the most of the fluffy bathrobes! It was just a wonderful stay, and we got a late check out – absolute game changer. I actually went back to bed for a nap after breakfast – oh yes!
#5 Harborne Kitchen
The main birthday event was on the Saturday evening. We headed to Harborne Kitchen for their 8 course tasting menu, with paired drinks. It was utterly incredible! I have more to say in a blog post coming tomorrow. But oh my, it really was incredible. I can’t wait to go back. I felt utterly spoilt and had the most incredible time with my wonderful boyfriend. We’re already plotting our next weekend away…
What are your recent Happy Things? Let me know in the comments,
