A Few Days in Northumberland | Travel

June 7, 2017

Last week Dr W and I headed north for a few days away. After a fleeting visit to the Northumberland countryside when we spent a weekend in Newcastle, we decided we wanted a longer visit this time.

We stayed in a wonderful little cottage called The Bastle, just outside of Hexham. It’s small but perfect for a few days away. The owner was really friendly and made us feel very at home. It’s also dog friendly if you’re looking for somewhere with that as a requirement. Our first night was a lazy one spent in front of the fire with new books and beers.

National Trust Cragside

Our first day we decided to drive to Rothbury, about an hour away from us. We’d had several recommendations to check out the National Trust property Cragside. I’m so glad we did, it was incredible! Dedicated to Lord Armstrong who did an awful lot for science and engineering it was a really interesting visit. It was also set in the most beautiful grounds and we took in one of the “guided” walks around, this was one of the longer ones but it meant we got our steps in and got to see the property and estate from all angles. We will need to return though as it was just SO big, we didn’t see all of what was on offer!

The Cheviot Hills

We decided for our second full day to head to the Cheviot Hills, to climb Cheviot (which is actually a mountain). The weather was over cast, but we were ok with this as neither of us fancied a long walk in blazing sunshine (we pushed 18km on our walk!) We enjoyed the walk, it was challenging in parts but enjoyable all the same. It was nice to spend the day just chatting away and enjoying the views out to Bamburgh and Holy Island.

Bamburgh and Bamburgh Castle

After a bit of a chat over dinner the night before, we ended up deciding on heading to Bamburgh before heading home on the Friday. Mainly because I wanted to see the sea and walk along the beach. I’m so glad we did, it’s such a beautiful village and the castle was interesting. Also owned by Lord Armstrong of Cragside. It was his holiday home – jealous! We enjoyed a windy walk along the beach, afternoon tea at the castle and I had a sneaky gin in the pub.

I’m so glad we managed to get away. Dr W and I both needed this break, especially with him starting his new job this week! If you’re looking for a staycation location I can highly recommend Northumberland.

Have you been to Northumberland? Would you visit? Let me know in the comments,

Oh my goodness – all this is on my doorstep and I didn’t know! We’re looking for a short break that isn’t too expensive and I think this is just perfect. Definitely one to consider for the summer. Thank you for the insight, great post

Wow Emma, the imagery is stunning. I love the English countryside and have seen quite a few lovely places but never been to Northumberland. My mum is coming over next month and I was planning on going to the lakes but this place looks even better.

Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s a lot less busy than the lakes and still just as picturesque – also a lot cheaper ๐Ÿ™‚
