When I was in Manchester the other week I caught up with quite a few of my friends. One of my friend dates involved us heading to All Star Lanes at the Great Northern Warehouse to check out the new menu and do some bowling.
Having not been to All Star Lanes for food before I was interested to see what was on offer. The menu at All Star Lanes is American food, from burgers, to big sharing platters to mac n cheese. (FYI there were three of us, so there are many many food pics to come – sorry if it makes you hungry!)
Despite my love of gin I’ve hardly written about it lately! I was very pleased to see that there is a new Gin Pins menu at All Star Lanes. Many fantastic gins on offer all matched perfectly with their garnishes and appropriate tonics – this is how it should be.
Ms M opted for the Malfy Gin, whilst I had the Hernö Gin. Both utterly delicious and perfectly refreshing after a long, warm day in the city. My only criticism is they weren’t served in a copa, just a wine glass, so the tonic (as I fancied a longer drink for dinner) didn’t all fit in with the ice as well!
I started with the Popcorn Squid, the batter was wonderfully seasoned and the squid was cooked perfectly. It came with a spicy mayo that had a real kick, which I thought went really well. Mr C picked the Cornchips and Spin Dip, an interesting but tasty starter none the less. Not sure I’d have picked it, but the cheesy spinach dip was tasty. The only off point was that there were more chips than dipping allowed for! Ms M went for the Bourbon Glazed Spare Ribs, these were sweet but the addition of chilli balanced them really well. They were also perfectly cooked, falling off the bone wonderfully.
I went with the new signature All Star Lanes fish, The High Roller. A wagyu burger, with lobster tail and finished with prawns. The burger was well cooked and juicy. Sadly the lobster was a little over done and I encountered a bit of shell. It didn’t ruin the entire experience, but I did feed back to the server. Ms M ordered the veggie burger, The Zuccado. This turned out to be a great choice, panko fried avo (delicious) with cheeee and salsa. She would suggest to Amy veggie or someone looking for something different to order. Mr C ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger Mac n Cheese. It was gooey, cheesy and contained lots of pieces of burger and bacon. He said it was very filling but also rather tasty! They also do a veggie option and allow you to customise with jalapeños and other things – all you have to do is ask.
We couldn’t not order fries for our burger sides. The Reuben Fries were covered in cheese, salt beef and jalapeños. They were wonderfully moreish and cooked perfectly, lovely and crisp on the outside but soft on the inside.
The cocktail menu was exciting with loads of drinks to choose from. I liked that it explained on the menu if they were long or short drinks. Always useful. We ordered the Gin Julep and Rhubarb Cooler, but sadly they were a little sweet for my liking, and pretty similar tasting because of this. I think I’d be sticking to the gins on my next visit. It’s a shame because the menu looked so interesting!
OK, so here we have another food venue in Manchester offering American food. It’s becoming a rather saturated market in Manchester and I don’t think All Star Lanes offers anything new to stand out from the crowd…. But it is a Manchester staple so it must be doing something right. The service was good, the gin menu was fantastic and the food, despite a couple of niggles, was generally of good quality.
Our meal finished earlier than we thought it would and they were able to accommodate us earlier for bowling, which ended up being good fun. I came second, doing surprisingly well for someone with terrible joints. I actually found it really fun and I love the set up at All Star Lanes, we had cocktails whilst we bowled! Definitely a good date night venue. They also have a private dining and bowling area, so also perfect for birthday parties and events.
Have you been to All Star Lanes? What would you order off the new menu? Let me know in the comments,
P.S. We received our food and bowling on the house in return for an honest review. As ever all words, pictures and opinions are my own.
P.P.S. All Star Lanes Manchester is located at Great Northern Warehouse, 235 Deansgate, Manchester M3 4EN.
