Trying The New Menu at Chaophraya | Manchester

I felt very lucky to be invited down to Chaophraya shortly after the release of their new menu. I’d heard good things about the food, so was excited to see what they could offer with a new menu.

I read a little about the new menu in the run up to visiting. Chaophraya say the new menu offers both classic and contemporary dishes. They’ve also worked very hard with creating the accompanying cocktails, with new spirits hitting their bar shelf there are some wonderful creations.




The Starters

I decided I wanted seafood so went with the Soft Shell Crab and Squid Tempura. I was a little nervous about this dish because batter can be difficult and end up soggy but I was not disappointed. The seafood and accompanying vegetables (asparagus and bean) were in a wonderfully light crispy batter. The chilli & lime avocado dip was spicy yet refreshing, I could’ve done with a little more though.

Ms M decided to go with something more contemporary, the Thai Chicken Tacos. These were beautifully put together and I was a little envious when they arrived. The red curried chicken finished off with coconut milk and served over seared rice flour tacos. They were dainty and delicate, but still managed to pack a punch. I would highly recommend (Ms M spared me a bite!)





The Drinks

We tried a selection of cocktails. Ms M started with a Mocking Bird. Served in a Cage- which is actually not too difficult to drink out of! This was a refreshing mixture of Jinzu Gin, Maraschino, Pink Grapefruit Juice, Cherry topped with Soda. The perfect start.

I went with another refreshing drink first, the Chang Rai. Whitley Neil Gin blended with Kings Ginger, Lychee, Apple, Lemon and topped with Soda. Delicious!

Throughout our dinner we mainly stuck to water but for desserts we picked another couple of cocktails. Ms M going with another theatrical cocktail. This one more smokier, which as you poured it filled the air. A wonderful autumnal drink, the Temple of Dawn. Made with the spicy Whitley Neil Gin, Cherry Marnier, Almond, Maraschino and Lemon. The smokiness was incredible.

I went with a sweeter drink this time, the Gentleman Badger. A twist on a Pimms and lemonade. Whilst it still had the Pimms, it was mixed with Gentleman Badger’s Sloe Gin and topped with Ginger Ale and Lemonade. A more autumnal take on a classic summer drink and I really enjoyed it!





The Mains

For the main event I went with the Palm Sugar and Chilli Glazed Chicken. Spatchcock baby chicken grilled over charcoal with a palm sugar, chilli and coriander glaze. I found the spice didn’t come out as much as I’d have liked, but enjoyed the sweetness. The chicken was tender and perfectly cooked.

Ms M went with a Duck Tamarind. Roasted duck with palm sugar and tamarind sauce topped with fried shallots, cashew nuts and dried chilli. This was sweet, spicy and savoury all in one. The sauce was delicious and moreish.

To go with our mains we had fried coconut rice, steamed noodles, sugar snap peas and tenderstem broccoli. These were the perfect accompaniments. Not too heavy and well matched with the mains.




The Dessert

Despite our full bellies we decided to stick with trying dessert too. Now I was very full so got a refreshing dessert of Peach and Prosecco Sorbet. This was just what I needed after my dinner.

Ms M went with something a bit more extravagant, the Chocolate Bombe. A melting chocolate bombe with Thai whiskey ice cream and honey and toasted sesame popcorn centre with hot caramel sauce. This was pure magic and so wonderfully decadent. The hot caramel sauce was naughty but wonderful. Ms M was very quiet whilst she savoured this dessert!


What can I say here? Chaophraya have really pulled out the stops on this menu. Ms M was most impressed as she had only been recently visited and eaten from the older menu. We both agreed the mix of modern and classic dishes was a wonderful idea. The cocktails went very well with the dishes, and the staff are happy to recommend dishes and drinks to suit your palette. For a date night or a special occasion I would highly recommend Chaophraya. And I’m very pleased to see one in Birmingham so I can drag Mr W our for a wonderful date night!

    The Temple Of Dawn looks incredible! I have never tried Chaophraya before but you may have just tempted me now 🙂

    This is one of our favourite places to eat in Manchester. Their massaman curry is the best I have had outside of Thailand.

      It’s definitely one I need to return too when I’m back up north, although I have discovered I can get my fix in Birmingham 🙂

    I loved the new menu, so many great new dishes, tacos were awesome!!!! Loved the asparagus tempura too x

    I’ve never heard of Chaophraya before. Is it part of a chain? The food and drinks sound wonderful.

      It is part of a chain, they have a few dotted over the country. Well worth a visit.
