Last week I celebrated a special day with my favourite person. You’re all thinking Dr W and Valentine’s Day right?! Wrong. It was Mummy Pond’s birthday and we headed to Hotel Du Vin for Afternoon Tea.
I love to treat Mummy Pond on her birthday. Last year we had a day out with my sister that definitely involved tea and cake, and the year before that we went for afternoon tea (can you see a theme here?) So in the run up to the big day I decided to book the day off so we could head to Hotel Du Vin in Birmingham for afternoon tea.
Gin and Savoury Treats
We kicked off our afternoon with Gin and Tonic each. Because why not?! A Gin Mare was enjoyed with Mediterranean Fever Tree Tonic. Now whilst the serve wasn’t perfect, the staff did apologise that the ice machine was not working properly and I was OK with that.
The savoury tier is served separately, which I quite liked. The staff were more than happy to make sure my mum had an alternative to the smoked salmon bagel, as she couldn’t eat it. We also had an egg mayo sandwich, a Gruyère croissant (my favourite bit!), a heritage tomato and tapenade galette and a goat’s cheese and spinach quiche. These were all very tasty and I just loved the plate they were served on.
CANDY FLOSS! (and the Sweet Treats)
Then next up was the main event, and my my it was spectacular!! Two tiers of sweet treats (with some wonderful surprises) and of course, the more traditional scones with jam and cream. The tea also arrived, both of us opting for the Twinnings English Breakfast. Whilst we let our tea cool before drinking we decided to pose with the candy floss, isn’t it so cool?! A definite highlight of the whole thing!
GIN AND TONIC SORBET! (And Scones)
We jumped for the Gin and Tonic sorbet first out of all our sweet treats, for fear of melting. This was actually a fantastic palette cleanser after our savoury tier. A very refreshing and very ginny sorbet, Mummy Pond had to resist licking the mini sundae glass clean!
Then there were sweet mini treats of a lemon meringue pie, a homemade raspberry and dark chocolate teacake and a rhubarb and custard doughnut. I really did enjoy the rhubarb and custard doughnut, I could’ve had just a whole plate of them! The lemon meringue pie was perfectly balanced too, very tasty.
Of course we also enjoyed our tea with the scones, cream and jam. I liked that you got a plain and a fruity scone, sometimes it’s good to have variety. The staff were also very happy to top both our teas up, we’re tea fiends and drink it very quickly. Haha.
Fizz to Finish and Overall…
Of course we couldn’t finish without a glass of fizz! We toasted Mummy Pond’s birthday and then took our candy floss with us for the road and carried on our afternoon of retail therapy! Overall the afternoon tea was splendid. Nothing was too much for the staff and they were fantastic with dietary requirements. They offer substitutions for anything, just discuss it with your server. They made my mum feel extra special on her birthday too, which was very nice.
Have you been to Hotel Du Vin for afternoon tea? Would you pay a visit? What would you like to try? Let me know in the comments,
P.S. I won a competition for Afternoon Tea, but paid for our drinks on top of the Afternoon Tea. Hotel Du Vin had no idea I was writing this post.
P.P.S. Hotel Du Vin is located at 25 Church St, Birmingham B3 2NR.
