An Interesting Concept: Your Buddy Mary | Manchester

October 20, 2016

Most people will know that Miss Pond (and myself) are gin girls at heart, but there’s always something to be said for a well-crafted Bloody Mary, so the invite to the Your Buddy Mary launch was most welcome.

(Thanks Dr C for covering this event…)

Your Buddy Mary” is the brainchild of Simon Burgess. His aim is to give the Bloody Mary its rightful place in the spotlight in a number of exciting and quirky ways. To test out his ideas a group of bloggers were invited down to The Restaurant Bar in Grill in Manchester to try out all things Bloody Mary.

Our invite told us to come “hungry and hungover” – both of which I did! We were welcomed with mimosa and ushered through to the private dining room. Here we first laid eyes on the the itinerary for the day. My first thoughts were, I had better call my friend and cancel snowboarding- there’s no way I’ll be walking after this!

We kicked off with an upside down breakfast pizza. Pastry filled with sausage, bacon, beans, egg and a mountain of cheese. With the pizza we got our first taste of the Bloody Marys on offer – a Virgin Juiced Mary, The Original Bloody Mary and the Red Snapper (Gin instead of vodka). The presentation of the drinks and their taste were wonderful. The highlight for me (surprise surprise) was the Red Snapper. This had just the perfect amount of spicy and sharp notes, making me long for another one.

The next course, was billed as There’s Something about Mary, and there certainly was! After we all took a solid 10 minutes photographing the drink from every angle, the task of how to eat it reared its head. Never one to shy away from these things I dug in and I can honestly say it was delicious. Whatever the spicy coating on the chicken was, I need it in my life! And the drink itself? A seriously good, perfectly spiced Bloody Mary, by far one of the best that I’ve ever had. When it comes to food and Bloody Marys, Simon knows what he’s doing!

After we’d finished, or been defeated by There’s Something About Mary, came my favourite part of the day. Something I think truly makes this venture quite unique. The DIY Bloody Mary – not to drink on the day, but bottled to be taken home with you for the next morning and the Sunday hangover. I can’t express how much I love this idea!

We all set about choosing the Stoli vodka we wanted (Jalepeno for me!) and adjusting our spice levels with condiments from Hendersons Relish, Cholula and St Lucifer Spice. As well as lemon juice and good old horseradish. Simon had with him pickle juice, which gave the perfect kick to my Bloody Mary. I might have gone slightly overboard on the spice level for most people’s tastes… When I split it with my friend the next day he practically choked on it, but for me it was spot on.

Then we were sadly on to our final round of drinks, the Bacon, Beam and Maple (Bourbon instead of vodka), the Bloody Maria (tequila) and the Bloody Caesar (Clamato instead of tomato juice). I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Bourbon Bloody Mary, but only because it was slightly too sweet for me. My favourite cocktail of the day definitely goes to the Bloody Maria. The spice mix in this was a little different and it felt a little zingier – right up my street!

So now you’ve read that, seen the food and drinks and are thinking how can I get involved with this?! Well Simon’s plan is three fold at the moment – pop ups, the first of which is Halloween Buddy Club and will be at the Liquor Store in Manchester 30th October (£10 per person). Secondly is the Buddy’s Boozy Barge Bonanza, a 3 hour Bloody Mary food and drink extravaganza (Introductory price of £35 instead of £45). Thirdly Your Office Buddy – an in office Bloody Mary experience (£10 per person, minimum of 10 people).

If all of this sounds like your Mason jar of Bloody Mary then check out Your Buddy Mary and take a peek for yourself. Let me know what you think in the comments,

Oh my goodness, I feel hungover just looking at all the food and drink! There was certainly a great deal of food and drink at the even and it sounds like Dr C had a good time.

I’m not sure I’ll be attending any of the pop-ups as I’m more of an ale girl myself. Although, I will point my vodka loving friends in that direction though.
